This project required familiarization with 25 typefaces based on five historical categories: Old Style, Transitional, Modern, Slab Serif, and Sans Serif. In addItion, the challenge was to incorporate an essay relevant to an overall concept or theme. The content of the essay could either relate directly to the type specimens or it could take a more conceptual or philosophical approach yet must still be relevant to the content in the type specimen portion of the book. Laws of the Letter by Ellen Lupton and Abbott Miller talk about the history and evolution of the letterforms through different stages. Adobe Garamond Pro was selected as the typeface because of its classic and old feel that reflects history. The use of a timeline theme helps present the message of different eras in the progression of typography.
